El Presidente

El Presidente

El Presidente is a polished Cuban rum cocktail associated with Havana’s golden cocktail era and the social scene of the 1910s to 1940s. Traditionally built from white rum, blanc vermouth, curaçao, and a touch of grenadine, it delivers a smooth, lightly sweet, aromatic profile with gentle orange and sugar notes rather than aggressive acidity. It is typically stirred, not shaken, so the skill set is more about balance, temperature, and clean dilution than theatrical technique. Served in a coupe or cocktail glass, it works especially well before dinner, at receptions, or whenever a guest wants something spirit-forward yet graceful rather than heavy or sharply bitter.
Stir all ingredients and strain infrozen coupette , garnish with an orange peel.

  • 1 Coupe or cocktail glass
  • 1 Mixing glass
  • 1 Jigger
  • 1 Bar spoon
  • 1 Julep strainer

Ingredients

  • 45 ml White rum
  • 22 ml Blanc Vermouth
  • 7.5 ml Orange curaçao
  • 5 ml Grenadine
  • 1 Twist Orange

Instructions

  • Place a coupe in the freezer or chill it with ice water.
  • Fill a mixing glass with fresh ice.
  • Measure in white rum, blanc vermouth, orange curaçao, and grenadine.
  • Stir steadily for 20–25 seconds until the drink is cold and slightly diluted.
  • Discard the ice from the coupe and strain the mixture into the chilled glass.
  • Express an orange twist over the surface or add a cherry if using.
  • Serve straight up.

Notes

Blanc vermouth gives the drink its proper rounded, silky profile; dry vermouth makes it noticeably leaner. Keep the grenadine restrained so the drink stays pale coral rather than candy-sweet.
  • A soft oak, vanilla, and hints of toasted almond or molasses.
  • Grand Marnier introduces a caramelized, burnt-orange tang.
  • A sweet, floral, and herbal undertones that smooth out the drink.
  • Fruity Grenadine: A dash provides a touch of sweet pomegranate depth
